Shea Butter from Ghana: Raw vs Refined, Grades & Wholesale Pricing

CVGhana Trade Intelligence

Ghana is the world's second-largest producer of shea nuts and one of the leading exporters of processed shea butter. The country's northern regions — Upper East, Upper West, and Northern Region — form the heart of the shea belt, where millions of shea trees grow wild and provide livelihoods for over 600,000 women who collect, process, and sell shea nuts and butter.

Shea Butter Grades

The American Shea Butter Institute (ASBI) classification system is widely used:

  • Grade A (Premium): Unrefined, extracted using traditional or cold-press methods without chemicals. Highest nutrient content. Preferred by cosmetics manufacturers and artisan skincare brands.
  • Grade B (Standard): Refined using natural methods (clay filtration). White color, mild scent. Used in cosmetics that require consistent color and texture.
  • Grade C (Industrial): Solvent-extracted and highly refined. Used primarily as cocoa butter equivalent (CBE) in chocolate and confectionery manufacturing. Largest volume segment.

Shea Butter Uses by Industry

  • Cosmetics & Personal Care (60% of demand): Moisturizers, lotions, lip balms, hair products, soap making, sunscreen formulations. Grade A and B preferred.
  • Food & Confectionery (30% of demand): Cocoa butter equivalent (CBE) in chocolate manufacturing, cooking oil, margarine production. Grade C (refined) used exclusively.
  • Pharmaceutical (10% of demand): Ointment bases, wound healing formulations, anti-inflammatory preparations. Grade A preferred for bioactive compound retention.
